So if a tenant has a pet and wants to keep it The best strategy would be to lie and not disclose the fact they have one when applying for a rental unit then later on move in the pet when the become tenants?
Moderator- There is a better strategy - but I am not giving it on this board - the unfortunate thing is that it is landlords trying to violate the "no pets clause" law puts tenants in a dilemna - and therefore requires any strategy at all - we should be able to tell landlords that we can not be discriminated against for having a pet - and be proud and open to have a pet

: Sorry, I can not agree. One of my reasons is
: unassailable. the law is the law. No pets
: provisions or policies are void and
: unenforceable under the Residential
: Tenancies Act. Any information I give - or
: any one else gives - must be in accordance
: with the Act.
:
: Is it a good law with regards to pets? I
: think so and we all have a right to express
: our opinion.
:
: Pet lovers could give you a lot of good
: reasons. Pets are a good thing. they are our
: friends and companions, and they bring
: responsibility. When my kids were growing
: up, we always had a cat or cats. Now they
: are all grown and they all still have pets.
:
: Should there be reasonable limitations? Yes.
: Is there? Well there can be some debate on
: that - but not an out right ban.
:
: Historical note. There was a court case
: about 20 years ago where the court refused
: to grant an eviction based on a tenant
: having a cat in apparent violation of the
: lease. Shortly thereafter, the David
: Peterson Government amended the Act to void
: no pets clauses.
:
: A lease agreement is only
: "dishonest" if it carries clauses
: that are wrong such as a no pets clause.
:
: Thank you for sharing your opinion with us.
: Our opinion is that landlords should follow
: the law.

: Although you may chose not to post this I am
: motivated to say that this attitude is
: exactly what leads to bad landlords.
: I am disappointed to see that tenants and
: there activists do not respect landlords
: enough to even enter into a lease agreement
: with honesty.
: I did not initially understand what all the
: fuss was on the landlord site about not
: trusting tenants and the need to tightly
: screen applicants but now I am beginning to
: understand.
: Owning a pet is not a right it is a
: privilege restricted by the fact that
: tenants are not owners of there home and do
: not have the rights and privileges of a
: owner.
: If a tenant wants to have a pet they should
: find a landlord willing to accept pets or
: the regulations should be changed to allow
: landlords to collect pet and damage
: deposits.
: Sorry to say but I have always had a mutual
: respect relationship with my landlords or I
: moved. I never intentionally defied the
: wishes of any landlord I have ever had.
: I can only conclude that advocacy groups
: must benefit from controversy other wise you
: would never give this type of advice to
: tenants.
