My understanding is it is not a violation of any regulations for a landlord to have a no pet policy and by doing so reject applicants that have pets.
Would it not be a benefit to all tenants with pets to have a damage or pet deposit to encourage landlords to allow pets. In this way responsible pet owners would find more available housing and landlords would be protected from damage caused by irresponsible pet owners.
I agree pets are a good thing and we should be doing everything we can to encourage landlords to accept pets but there must be some better solution that for tenants to lie to landlords and ultimately end up making them mad by disrespecting there wishes simply because the can.
Moderator - If landlords abide by the RTA which disallows no pets provisions, tenants are not put in the ethical dilemna of how to answer an unethical question - do you have pets? or an unethical policy - we don't allow pets
Hey gerry - You have made your argument - lets end this...after all, this is a thread on rental discrimination that drifted into the pets question - which the courts decided 20 years ago (not me)
