Hello,
Currently I am close to being completely incapacitated, being an individual very sensitive to cigarette smoke but exposed to secondhand smoke on a constant basis in my apartment, after moving there for close to two months. I am developing asthma attacks, irregular and racing heartbeat, dizziness and being jittery, insomnia and appetite loss, among other symptoms, to a point where I can no longer carry out normal daily functions and there is no more time to lose.
I had various discussions with the management of the building about this issue starting from the very beginning, but the experience so far tells me that he is more interested in making sure I do not harass the other tenants by posting a note to suggest if they could kindly smoke near the window of their units, and making sure I do not cause any damage to the building if I do try to seal off the areas that I believe is leaking smoke (which is one of the 20+ things I am already doing to alleviate the problem). So far he also denied my observation that the structure of the building is allowing for this leaking of SHS, saying it is technically not possible.
The problem is the cigarette smoke is not coming from windows and doors where I could have sealed it off. It is seeping through electrical outlets and the gap between the carpet and the base of the walls, all over the apartment. Again, the manager says it is technically impossible, but if it quacks like a duck, looks like a duck and smells like a duck, it is a duck to me. The newly installed carpet does smell like cigarettes to me.
It appears I need to obtain scientific proof that there is cigarette smoke, if I want to appeal anything. Perhaps send a patch of my air purifier filter, or, a small, inconspicuous patch of the carpet, to some lab? Or arrange a visit with some inspector? Does anyone know where I can do so, and quickly?
Or if there are any other things I can or should do?
Every night when I kiss my 16-month old daughter goodnight and catches a waft of the cigarette smoke, knowing she is also smoking the same stuff every day, I feel terribly guilty and in despair.
I appreciate anyone's speedy response, thanks!
