Together we are strong!

So we need to unite to make sure that everyone can waste as much electricity as they want to?
I LIKE paying for my electricity. Why should I pay for someone elses electricity through my rent?

: Somebody should be paying you to have some
: extra hotline numbers and people to staff
: them.
:
: We need one to report crooked landlords
: doing this hydro scam, one to fight public
: housing slumlords, and we could use one to
: tell us what can be recycled in apartments
: and what can't. Its too confusing.

: Stratacon said that we would only have been
: using about $25 a month.
:
: And Toronto Hydro lied too when I called and
: they said that sounded about right and that
: they fully supported these smart meters.
:
: When my first bill came in it was $125 for 2
: months rather than the 50 bucks I was
: expecting.
:
: What a ripoff by the landlord Stratacon and
: Toronto Hydro!

: "There are still a lot of tenants who
: are
: paying their own hydro, and in far too many
: cases that includes the cost of heat!"
:
: Sorry ~ it sounds like it's being suggested
: that tenants being responsible for their own
: utilities is a negative thing. Why should a
: tenants services be the landlord's
: responsibility? Basic needs are for
: everyone. As a tenant I would much rather
: have the control over my own energy
: comsumption rather than have a flat and
: often inaccurate amount included in my rent.
:

: Sorry but there's something I don't
: understand. Why not install the smart
: meters but leave the landlords responsible
: for paying the bills?
:
: There are still a lot of tenants who are
: paying their own hydro, and in far too many
: cases that includes the cost of heat! Too
: bad that gaping hole still exists in the
: legislation that's supposed to protect
: tenants.
:

: A victory for tenants. Yesterday, the
: Ontario
: Energy Board issued a compliance notice that
: made it crystal clear that smart meters are
: not to be installed in rental apartment
: buildings and this is based on 2005
: legislation under section 53.18 of the
: Electricity Act.
:
: The directive is lengthy but says "all
: non-compliant activity will cease
: immediately."
:
: This should stop the jumping the gun that
: was happening all over Toronto with tenants
: getting insufficient rent reduction offers
: in return for paying their own hydro.
:
: Many tenants felt compelled or co-erced to
: go along with this scheme. Tenants who
: explicitly said no to the offer were shocked
: to receive bills from the sub meter company
: any way!
:
: We will be getting more information today
: about enforcement of this compliance
: bulletin. I am most concerned about
: achieving justice for all the tenants I
: described in the above paragraph.
:
: We applaud the OEB for taking this action.
: We do wish they had done this sooner as the
: stress has mounted for tenants after we
: brought this to their attention last year.
:
: We also called on the Consumer Protection
: complaints division and the Ministry of
: Housing to act.
:
: Meanwhile, we remain 100% committed to
: energy conservation that is achieved in a
: fair and balanced manner. Smart meters
: could play a legitimate role, but landlords
: were attempting forced social engineering
: for their profit and for the profit of the
: smart meter company.
:
: We have proposed many other ideas that would
: be far more positive.
:
: To read the directive, go to the Ontario
: Energy Board web site.
:
: There is also an article in today's Toronto
: Star.
:
: The landlord spokesperson claims to be
: totally surprised. What? We have been
: fighting this issue for months. We have
: worked with the Advocacy Centre for Tenants
: Ontario, and we hace the support of the City
: of Toronto.
