Together we are strong!

1. Read the report...not the abridged stuff you find on other places on the internet. Try learning the code and try for improvement.
2. The issue is automatic rejection or discrimination based on a human rights code. Nowhere does it say that you must rent to all people on social assistance. It says you can not discriminate and you must consider all factors.
By the way, when I came to Toronto almost ten years ago, I stayed in a cheap hotel until I had permanent digs. Ive never missed a rent payment
Damage deposits? - Been banned since i was in high school. take it up with Bill Davis who brought in the Landlord Tenant Act.
And I will say this. Government has to take a much stronger role in housing people. It is a national and provincial embarrassment that we do not have more rent geared to income housing - like many other countries.

: It seems horrible that a landlord would say
: such a thing, doesn't it? Hold back on the
: tomato and rotten egg throwing and I will
: give you an example of why it makes sense
: for a landlord to do this..
:
: - if someone is calling from a cheap hotel
: or a shelter, they are probably on welfare,
: right? If they are on welfare you can never
: garnish their wages. It is illegal for a
: landlord to ask for a damage deposit in
: Ontario (many, many other places it is
: legal), so a landlord has no protection if
: the potential tenant damages their property
: - and - because they have no recourse by
: going through small claims and garnishiing
: after a welfare tenant moves out they are
: put at a severe risk. They are protecting
: themselves from financial ruin. This is
: caused by ridiculous laws in ontario that
: promote "discrimination".
:
: The more restrictions on landlords, the more
: they will pull back and the harder it will
: get. By advocating for the right not to pay
: a damage deposit, etc you make things hard
: for the tenant.
:
: The system is set up perfectly for con
: artist tenants to use and abuse. For
: well-intentioned landlords and tenants it
: offers nothing.
:
: why not attack the problem?

: Below is how a landlord commented on the
: recent human rights policy update on an
: internet discussion board.
:
: This landlord is unlicenced, has no control
: on rents on vacant units, and screens
: callers. I am not saying this landlord is
: racist, but a landlord sees a name on call
: display that maybe foreign looking, they
: just don't answer the phone.
:
: That is why we need more pro-active
: enforcement of human rights, licencing, and
: an end to vacancy de-control. And cough
: drops just became handier.
:
: Here are that landlord's comments verbatim.
:
:
:
: "Still I will screen my tenants the
: same as always ,
: I dont answer private number , If you need
: to hide I dont call you back
: i never answer the phone so they have to
: leave a phone number
: i also google phone numbers as it can be
: from a shelter or cheap hotel , cheap hotel
: can mean the shelters were full and are
: putting them up
: MY outgoing message says to leave a work and
: home number .
:
: I never thought of screening out smokers by
: listening to them smoke
: yes smokers do have husky voices
: If i dont like someone , I play the annoying
: landlord
: and price my units at 1200.00 to 1400.00
:
:
: If i dont like a tenant and they appear to
: be going along with the bad landord crap
: ,and they sound desparate , I just say I
: lost their call back number , I alway say I
: dont have call display , so there is no way
: I can be accused of delibertly screening
: people out
:
: The part of contolling tenants on welfare ,
: they are self screening in the rules as they
: cant rent high end rent , their rules says
: its a dead give away they have extra income
:
: In short its all smoke and mirrors . I can
: appear to be the most fair landlord ,
:
: most of this stuff is old policies rehased .
: they cant inforce any of it
: no names right , only if evictions canbe
: address only and how would we take tenants
: to small claims court"
