The cover for Nova is awesome! Nova and the Surfer are standing on the Surfer's board locked in hand to hand combat. They are small compared to the face of Galactus, which is looming behind them!
After seeing the cover, a fan posted the following:
"Looks cool, but I don't think it's a good story idea.
Based on power and skill level, Surfer could whip Nova any day of the week, even before the recent power boost that went along with Surfer becoming a Herald again. Especially if the full Nova-Force is still tied up dealing with the transmode virus, Nova shouldn't have a chance. And the whole idea of people fighting heralds and/or Galactus is getting really lame. Galactus is a cosmic force, not some big bad guy who eat planets willy-nilly, and he should not be trifled with."
I responded with the following:
"I disagree on this being lame. First off, Nova is the self appointed protector of the Galaxy. When he gets a call for help, he responds. Secondly, Nova is not as weak as you think. Rich has always had a problem with the idea of totally letting loose. The Worldmind states that with the complete power of the Nova Force and the brains of the Worldmind there is no power in the galaxy which could stop him. Now I'm guessing Galactus could, but I'm not sure of the Silver Surfer, because we truly do not know Nova's power level.
Thirdly, the virus has got to be gone. It is post Conquest, and Nova could hardly stand (and was dying) in the Annual (have you read it). If he is now responding to calls, then we know he is healthy again.
Fourthly, DnA is writing this. This will not be the same old hero versus Galactus and the Surfer story. Be warned.
AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, if this would not get more people to take a look at Nova, what will? This is genius marketing. This is a far different cover than we are used to seeing on Nova. Rich is not just flying through space - he is actually in battle. Now he and the Surfer could look a little better, but as someone pointed out - this cover conveys that Rich and the Surfer are gnats compared to the big "G."
Again, if new readers see this cover and do not purchase this book, I don't know what will make them."
By the way, I am very happy with the action cover. Marvel and DC have gotten away from them - but they are a great preview of what's going on inside and actually part of the story telling. Even though I have loved all of Nova's covers, I thought they needed action shots (which I believe we've discussed before). I bet you Nova will get a sales bump during this trilogy.
