I tried to give Sam a chance with 6 issues. It felt like I was betraying Rich with every dollar I spent on Vol.5. Even when I bought the issue where BRB supposedly first meets Rich.
I know I have been regularly using the so-called "derogatory" term for Sam almost immediately after joining the board here and over at cosmicbooknews. By everything I've seen and know of the character, the label has been more than fitting. Sam just did not seem worthy of taking on the name and legacy that Richard Rider had built. "Nova" Vol.5 was cute at first but then as time went by, the joke never ended. I shake my head every time I flip through an issue that Sam appears in. The biggest stink of it all is that many of his fans do not seem to know why we loyal Classic Nova fans place Richard Rider in such high regard or they just simply do not really care. If Rich was so great, and had steady sales numbers, why did Marvel can him?
I've only done one fan art of Black Nova: Sam Alexander. That was way back right around the time that Point One was released. I had promised myself not to do another one because of the great disrespect shown to we loyal fan base Richard Rider fans. I made it a point not to do any sketch requests or commissions on the character. Whether or not I continue to do so depends on the outcome of GOTG Vol.3 #20 and the fate of Richard Rider. The same goes with me buying any more comic books form Marvel Comics.

: I read the latest post in Thanosrule's blog:
:
:
:
: I have to say that I really enjoy your blog
: posts! You take the time to write rational,
: thought-out posts instead of just firehosing
: emotional napalm.
:
: In terms of the new post about boards, it
: did give me time to think about this message
: board and I want to express my thinking on
: how things are run here.
:
: The purpose of this board has always been to
: give Nova fans a nice place to talk about
: Nova. Somewhere a Nova fan (regardless of
: which incarnation of Rich, Sam or even
: Garthan Saal you're a fan of) can talk about
: things and those opinions are respected even
: if they aren't agreed with.
:
: And things here have been really good for
: the most part. Occasionally a flare up
: happens and it has to be addressed but it's
: definitely not often or that out-of-control.
:
: But as you pointed out in your blog, the
: rift between Sam fans and Rich fans has
: gotten sadly wider.
:
: But I think it's only coming from a few
: extremists on both sides and thankfully not
: the majority of fans. And the board rules
: here are in place to help make sure that the
: ones who want to just share their love of
: Nova can.
:
: Of course, when someone posts an opinion, it
: should be understood by the poster that
: there will be folks who may disagree and
: will express that disagreement. And as long
: as it's done maturely and rationally, posts
: won't be deleted here just because they
: disagree with someone else.
:
: In relation to the new rule about using (as
: Darren calls it) slang terms, it's really
: there to try and help keep posts from going
: off the rails. The term NINO was a cute one
: when Matt and Bill came up with it. And they
: used it in an appropriate way in the
: beginning.
:
: However, others grabbed onto it and started
: using it as a derogatory term by surrounding
: it with hostile attacks on the character,
: creators and Sam fans. To the point where we
: prefer it not be used.
:
: And that goes to the Sam fans too. If a Sam
: fan ever refers to Richard Rider as
: "dick rider", the post will be
: deleted and the person banned. That's
: obviously a lot worse than NINO ever has
: been and there's no room for that immature
: usage here.
:
: To be honest, I don't go to many Nova
: message boards for the simple reason I don't
: want to read extremists attacking a comic
: book character. Just typing that seems
: ridiculous. That a small group of rabid
: readers can get so worked up about it just
: makes me shake my head.
:
: I haven't been to CBN's forum for over a
: year and a half because it had gotten so
: ugly against Sam. Matt has told me it's
: gotten better though. I just haven't
: bothered to go back yet. And for the record,
: Matt has done an excellent job with CBN. I
: still go there for news and strongly
: encourage everyone to visit there often.
:
: And by the same token, I don't go to CBR's
: forum anymore either. They had gotten so
: anti-Rich and pro-Sam to the point of
: deleting posts and banning people for simply
: posting something about Rich or simply
: pointing out something they didn't like in
: one of Sam's issues.
:
: That's just wrong. Different opinions (as
: long as they're expressed properly and
: respectfully) should always be welcomed. And
: that's the point of this message board. It's
: not to try and get everyone to feel the same
: way about both characters and agree with
: everything that Marvel does.
:
: If anyone feels we haven't done a good job
: here, please let Darren or me know. I truly
: like all the Nova fans whether they agree
: with me or not.
