In the end I really do wish we were united accross all the different factions; prior to the major change of direction Marvel implemented I did enjoy my time at CBN; there were good times there - even my tenure as colunist for Doctor Who my other great passion. But I think ultimately the cracks, and the way certain folks there treated contributors who I still appreciate very much as colleagues ultimately began the downward spiral to where we are now irrespective of Marvel. I hope occasionally those fans there remember those good days and maybe, just maybe- regret what friendships they have thrown away.
Supporting a site that ultimately plans to continue an open "hate campaign" against those that do not agree with them is just as bad as certain Marvel Editors treating fans with disrespct which mods at CBR allowed. Its a means to bring Rich Rider back I will never support or condone. There are other ways to do this and I hope folks here will pitch in ideas. Part of me actually regrets having to ban folks here but in the end when Nova64 appointed me as Moderator - I have to adhere to the rules and regs that Boardhost themselves impose.

: Whatever cool and tight explanation to this
: book you are hoping for..I'd temper your
: expectations.
:
: These writers don't know Nova lore. They
: wouldn't know a world mind from a living
: computer to save their life.
:
: Wish it were different.

: My bet? Marvel will reveal that Sam is
: actually half-Xandarian through his dad, who
: either adopted like Superman or crashlanded
: on Earth as a corpman who escaped from
: Xandar's destruction from first comic (later
: the final destruction drove him to
: alcoholism).
: Then Richard Rider was revived and used his
: hybrid DNA (with extra
: "enrichment" from his Latina mom)
: to revive the Xandarians.
: Or Timetravel.

:
: My personal take is that the best way to get
: Rich back is to embrace anything Nova
: related.
:
: Make Nova properties hot. If they are hot
: then they are much more likely to gamble on
: bringing Rich back. If Nova properties are
: cold then they will feel more of a risk
: bringing Rich back.
:
: My own plan is to buy anything with any
: version of Nova playing a role. I've gotten
: every Sam issue monthly. I'll be picking up
: Infinity Gauntlet. I want Marvel to get the
: idea that we love the hell out of Nova
: stuff.

: I have to give a round of applause for the
: way
: this particular thread and discussion is
: going on. Unlike the continual bad vibes,
: petty name calling from the Rider
: hard-nutcases at Cosmic Book News (yes I
: know you've been prying here and I know what
: you've been saying there my former
: friends)at least fans here at NMB are able
: to have dialogue on this very touchy subject
: like reasonable adults.
:
: Yes there needs to be a common, agree all
: strategy to keep Rich in frame; the fact
: that in the case of the NPP i-petiton, now
: with over 366 signatures from fans all
: across the world, yes its has gone worldwide
: (take note CBN!) shows that fans can
: comment, can unite to try and nring Rich
: back into his own title and somehow, if God
: does shine on our side, that the closed eyed
: execs at Marvel can see that he still has a
: niche in the current Nova set-up. Fact is,
: and fans of all chracters have to accept it
: that there are bumpy moments, such as Thanos
: mentions US Agent replacing Steve - a period
: I too did like for its brave attempt to
: change the established status quo.
:
: I still say its very regrettable that we now
: have a clear division/chasm between some
: factions, and some Nova websites; - I still
: hold CBN accountable for their often
: intolerable attitude to fans - even to rider
: fans who want to try and sample things in a
: new light which yes I still myself don't
: particularly like but in the end I still
: prefer to treat fans with some degree of
: respect and tolerance; but sadly some proved
: to slap that as an insult, hence the
: regreatable bans.
:
: So boycotts aside - which I don't favor and
: won't endorse or support; how else can we
: support Rich? Ideas most welcome - so if
: someone wants to start an ideas thread,
: please do. Daz/Nova3333

: I like the Captain America example.
:
: When I was a kid John Walker was going on
: and Cap fans revulsed. Walker got a nice
: coherant arc and story line that holds up
: well.
:
: Frankly the fans were more vocal on the
: matter and fought harder to see cap return.
:
: Marvel also was much more reasonable and
: listened to fans, making a poll and
: following the results to bring Steve back.
:
: Over the years Walker was a great period and
: turned out to be a fun addition. I'm huge US
: Agent fan.
:
: As far as I'm concerned Rich is my favorite
: character, so its the same kind of salt as
: it would be for Cap or Iron Man.
:
: But the reason you say are exactly why we
: need to fight for Rich;s return...it wont be
: handed to us. Either we want it ...or we
: don't. Things need to be done. Work needs to
: be done to bring him back. If we have a Ho
: HUM attitude...Rich will be buried. We are
: on year five now.

: Amen. I read Sam...I like Sam. But I prefer
: Richard. I am glad to see any incarnation
: of Nova. I don't want the character to
: die...We aren't talking about Captain
: America here...Nova could vanish for a long
: period of time.
:
: Sam's stories aren't as good as Richard's
: but I enjoy them and hope for Rider's
: eventual return. We shall see. I will be
: supporting the Nova brand moving forward.
:

:
: Well, that is just a foolish line of
: thinking.
:
: It is predicated on the idea that if there
: was no Sam then there would be a Richard.
:
: But that is flawed. If they wanted a
: Richard, they would use him.
:
: So even if Sam fails (and his run has
: failed; we'll see if he becomes useful in
: the ANAD Avengers) this does not mean that
: Rich is coming back.
:
: Therefore he is not a THREAT.
:
: Boycotting Sam does not protect Richard at
: all because the root problem is that they do
: not believe in Richard.
:
: This is further evidenced by them
: introducing new Novas both in Guardians 3000
: and now in the new Infinity Gauntlet.
:
: They like the idea of Nova. They do not see
: Richard as a viable character (for whatever
: reasons). If these are boycott then either
: one of two things will happen: a.) They
: will keep reinventing Nova until they find
: one people like or b.) They will give up on
: Nova.
:
: Frankly the best way to get Richard back is
: to EMBRACE any Nova in print. Make sure
: they know we love the Nova Corps. The more
: we embrace the idea of Nova the better
: chance he has of coming back.
:
: Boycotting is having the opposite effect of
: what you desire. In a sense, you are part
: of the threat and the (admittedly dumbass)
: Sam Alexander.
:

: The actual meat (or lack thereof) of the
: series forced me to change. I actually
: wanted to like it. I was a huge John Walker
: fan. I liked Jamie Reyes Blue Beetle. I
: adored Genis-vell. I'm down for change, if
: done right.
:
: As things rolled on, and I saw marvel
: scramble to make a mess out of the potential
: concept of "Sam Alexander"/Vol.5
: and any potential Nova "mythos "
: contributions. Marvel put 3 different
: writers on the book in 10 issues, and I soon
: learned the book was a "soup
: sandwich" of directionless or generic
: storylines that went nowhere. At times, the
: book felt like some hollow ultimate version
: meant for five year old denizens of Matt
: Judge's Idiocracy reality. (I do reference
: this movie often)
:
: Sam was a poor character who was not even
: allowed grow on the scale of Wolfman's
: original Richard Rider or Peter Parker,
: characters the model so desperately tried to
: knock off. Marvel brass dubbed Sam a cross
: between" Luke Skywalker and Peter
: Parker"( the exact archetype others
: described Richard Rider as when he debuted
: in the 70s). Problem was they all lied, and
: conveniently left out the fact he was mostly
: "Poochie" from the Simpsons.. Both
: Parker and Skywalker grew, and Sam did not.
: With issue #19 , I called it quits and
: dropped the title.
:
: At that time, after force feeding myself a
: bad book, I became unable to understand how
: anyone could dig the book, especially fans
: of the old higher brow sci fi DnA/Giffen
: stuff. Out on the internet, there was a sea
: of sophomoric fans of Sam that seemed to be
: hostile to the mere mention of Rider.
: Worse, a very real gestalt Disney/Marvel
: consortium , IMO began a campaign to
: discredit us to force Sam into a bigger
: role. So with Nova. Vol.5 certified in my
: book as being a dumpster fire, I didn't see
: it as expanding any sort of
: "mythos" of Nova or the Nova
: Corps, not in a positive way. Admittedly, I
: became very defensive. This material, was in
: some ways, dangerous to good taste
: everywhere.
:
: Thus, in my view, many of these new Sam fans
: became interlopers , not fellow Nova fans.
: They spit on even the old Rider stuff and ,
: just as malicious, as this so called
: "angry group of Rider fans" . For
: me, embracing them was like making friends
: with my ex-wife's new boyfriend. ..not gonna
: happen. Worse, I felt like they were digging
: something that was not even very good. The
: comic really was lousy.
:
: Therefore, I began to see supporting Sam's
: poor quality, poor direction book as a
: threat . The whole direction was a threat
: to the stories I wanted out of marvel
: cosmic. Vol. 5 was a threat to what I
: considered future good quality comics at
: marvel. It also was clearly a threat to
: the future of my favorite character, Richard
: Rider.
:
: And that is some of the core of where we
: are. Are these new Nova series/concepts a
: threat to Rider? I'd answer yes, and there
: are plenty of scenarios we could explore
: that would show why. If Sam catches on,
: marvel cranks out an animated Disney movie
: w/ Sam as Nova, kids eat it up with a straw,
: and good old Richard Rider and gritty
: stories about brothers and sisters in arms
: gets shit canned forevermore. All the Rider
: and DnA era gets stuffed in a gutter pretty
: damn quick...in fact so does the whole
: genre.(and unless your into Star Wars, its
: kinda where we are IMO) It could easily
: happen. Again, the paranoia is reasonable
: when we simply go back in marvel history and
: show when it did happen...because it
: certainly has.

: I have not been enjoying Nova/Sam, at all. I
: think I liked more of the stuff with Carrie,
: than the actual action/Nova stuff. It is
: just a bit too childish for me. I am hoping
: things "grow up" because, at this
: point, I will not be purchasing the Sam
: title after Secret Wars ends, if the Sam
: title returns. I have not liked the art or
: the story, but I have kept reading. But I am
: at the end of my rope. It is not fun for me,
: especially after the great stuff we old
: schoolers had with volume four. That was
: great writing, growth, character
: development, and more up my alley.
:
: I have no disdain for anyone who still reads
: Sam. I would be a hypocrite if I did,
: because I have bought each one. I am,
: however, a bit sad that Nova has abandoned a
: great character and made the title (and many
: other Marvel titles) way too simple and
: childish.
:
: I will read the post-apocalyptic Nova title.
: The art looks great, and the story may be
: more up my alley. But after that, I hope
: things change for the better.
:
: The funny thing is, Marvel seems very
: committed to the Nova idea. They are trying
: hard to keep it going. But they are not
: putting out a great product, yet.
