My approach has always been buy what you like. Don't buy something because it's a habit or you think that it will keep a title going. By the same measure, don't stop yourself from buying something you like or want to try because you think boycotting a book will make a difference.
Neither way works.
Those of us who supported DnA's Nova series (I bought multiple copies of the issues to try and boost sales and had the comic shop owner give my extras to non-buyers in the store) got kicked to the curb hard despite the series having respectable numbers.
And boycotting a comic doesn't do anything either. What happened to Sam's title when sales got low? Did it bring Rich back? No. It got a pretty good Eve Bakian in Infinity Gauntlet and then back to Sam and Jesse afterwards.
Rich won't return until the folks in charge at Marvel either change their mind or someone they favor presents a Rich Rider Nova pitch that they like.
As I think Thanosrules was trying to say in another thread - keep the faith.
Comic characters disappear all the time as the publishers try different approaches to the concept. Look how many Green Lanterns there have been. But they ultimately come back. Hal Jordan returned along with Alan Scott. Just as there's room for multiple GLs, there's room for multiple Novas.
It doesn't mean we can't let Marvel know that we'd like Rich back. I've sent Tom Brevoort the Return Rich Rider petition so they know there's still a number of people who want him back.
But there are other things to do. Reach out to the Marvel execs. They are on social media and have e-mail. But if you do choose to contact them, don't be a schmuck about it. Going off an a hate filled rampage of insults due to a false sense of entitlement and character ownership will only hurt your cause.
My experience with the Marvel execs and creators has always been good. They tend to be responsive and friendly. And I think a lot of that is because I treat them with respect and voice my opinions professionally.
Another option is to work with your comic shop to increase interest in Rich Rider and/or Sam. Retailers have a stronger voice with Marvel and if they see that there's a solid interest in Nova in their stores, they'll let the publisher know about it.
To celebrate the release of DnA's Nova #26 (at the time passing the record for longest Nova series), I worked with my LCS to have Nova Day. I brought in a cake with a Nova cover in frosting and anyone who bought a copy of Nova #26, a back issue of Nova or Nova TPB was entered into a drawing for a copy of the Nova Premiere Edition HC.
When Sam's series started, I had Nova Day II. This had cupcakes with the Nova helmet in frosting and a drawing for a Sam Nova action figure.
In fact, let's organize a nationwide Nova Day! Let's pick a date, check with our local shops and work together on promotional ideas (discounts on Nova trades/HC, bringing in treats, posters, etc.).
