Posted by Ernie Miller'58 on 6/29/2006, 6:33 am, in reply to "What Uaddan?" The "Uaddan" is a common anglisized spelling for the Arabic name of the North African Barbary Coast Sheep. He is a particularly smelly and bad tempered beast, capable of survival in areas unfriendly to most other fauna and a lot of flora. He can make a living anywhere there's little for warm blooded animals to survive on. He can prosper while he is at it. All he requires is a few Barbary Nannies, and he has a small herd. He has been known to kill some offspring (there's a temptation) to maintain the herd's food ration shares. Water is needed, but in small supply. Another spelling of his moniker is "Auodad." Google search for any of the three names to learn more. At the border of Arizona and Nevada, where the desert is the most inhospitable, the Arizona Fish and Game Department has established a working herd of Uaddans. I see them when I'm working the far Northwest corner of this fine State. I figure they might as well be there, nothing else can survive. It is cool to see them. The reminder of WHS is with me when I catch a glimpse. We (at WHS) picked the nickname for our teams in 1954 (or maybe earlier, in1953) because of the caged Uaddan they had on the base that beat the hell out of the heavy steel landing strip plates they used to cage him with. Speedy Ellis might have another take on the mascot and team naming, but I think it was done by democratic processes during my 1954/1955 tenure as a Freshman. The democratic processes used were similar to the ones used in most Dictatorships. The suggestion was made, seconded and all who voted, voted "eye" on pain of being ignored. Colors of Blue and White/Gray were selected the same way. (I wanted red and white damnit, and am still sulking!) I also wonder if Pat Arrowsmith can add to the mix of knowledge. Or, is that mixed up knowledge. Ernie

Have I got a connection to the Uaddan! "Never without an answer" is my motto!
That sheep was adleheaded from pounding the steel walls, but would not quit. The "would not quit" concept was the admired trait, not the adleheaded part.
