I was stationed at the AFRTS station at Wheelus for two years (1961-63) and I remember how we received calls from listeners, especially high school students who'd recently arrived at the base, asking us to play their favorite songs. The radio station received transcriptions containing multiple songs about twice a month, but the biggest hits weren't always included. So, the DJs, including me, often played our own records or tapes or wrote to our friends in the states and asked them to send us specific records that weren't included in the station's library. One of my buddies sent me "Last Night" by the Mar-Keys which was one of the songs that was requested most often. Those were interesting days...playing the requests of callers with pirated records. Luckily, none of us got into trouble for it.
