As our 40 th reunion approaches I wanted to report that I was just in Tripoli last month as part of a business trip my firm made to Europe and North Africa. ( I work for an institutional bond management firm in NYC and we were invited to make a presentation in Tripoli). It was amazing to be back after such a long time. I stayed for two nights at a new hotel (Bab Corinthian--check it out on Google !) just West of the old city. The Uaddan hotel was being renovated and a new Intercontinental is being built next to it. I stayed for two nights and had the opportunity to be driven by Wheelus, which seems to have been converted into a local domestic airport. We went to a delicious fish restaurant on the sea right near the old Wheelus location. I also had the chance to walk around town and visit Sabratha one afternoon--still beautiful. People were very friendly wherever I went, and it appears relations with the US are picking up again (though the old US Embassy in Tripoli remains abandoned since our days; and visas are hard to get here in the US. If you recall I was a Turkish citizen at the time and my father was at the Turkish Embassy, which is still right across the street from the old US Embassy in Tripoli).
I still have very fond memories of my days in Tripoli and at Wheelus High School. I would never have ended up going to college and staying here in the US had I not attended WHS for three years (and learned English starting in 9 th grade there !).
I hope this note finds all of you well and that you celebrate our 40 th milestone in June this year with great joy and jubilation.
My best to everyone,
Adnan
