Hi Tammy,
just found your message. I lived in Tripoli from 1966-72. My husband worked on base as a civilian. Our first baby was due to be born on 15 June 67 at the Wheelus Hospital were I went to see the Doctor during my pregnancy. We just called it the Base Hospital. The begin of June the 6-day-war between Israel and Egypt broke out and all the families and civilians were evacuated to Air Force Bases in Europe. So my son was born at the San Pablo USAF Hospital near Seville/Spain. After 3 month I returned to Tripoli. The Hospital was never bombed. For the next 3 yrs. I went there to see the Doctors. Only after the 6-day-war they ceased to deliver babies there. My 2nd son was born in June 69. Instead of traveling to a base in Germany for the delivery, I chose to have the baby at an Italian hospital in Tripoli. The US base was closed down in June 1970 and the Libyan Air Force took over. My husband kept working there till 72.
