origin of Wheelus name

I'm interested to know the origin of the Wheelus name, for both the High School and the Air Base. Who was it named for? Was it named for a WWII hero, and if so, was that man killed in action?
(I'm doing research for my father's memoirs - he knew a Hewitt Wheless during WWII - slightly different spelling but references on the web seem to confuse the two, or maybe they were the same man?).
