Yeah, I knew the Base Commander well, through his son Jim Dregne, one of the best athletes I ever played soccer and football with, on both the school Uaddan soccer team [well, we never won a Game, the Libyans beat us in the big stadium in downtown Tripoli 11-0; the crowds loved it! It just about drove Jim crazy, he was a perfectionist . . .]and Hospital Big Red, the Air Force team. Jim was a first-string halfback and I was first string offensive left end. He was professional quality.Colonel Dregne was pretty authoritative, about like my colonel father too, but they loved sports and we played golf together at Seabreeze and knocked back a few cool ones at the 19th hole, as well as the O Club a few times. There was no drinking age! I remember when Kennedy was killed in 1963, after the big Memorial, my Dad said to Colonel Dregne "Johnson did it." All the officers nodded agreement. We had many such conversations; I guess I was trusted because I was a Jock and they all assumed I was a gung-ho republican like all them.
