Yankee 30 Message Board
Posted by Nathan Elliott on 4/8/2003, 3:42 pm, in reply to "cracks in fiberglass cabin sole" I am starting to think it would be better to replace the whole mess. I believe the fiberglass liner is only 1/4 inch thick or so, and the few places it is not broken or cracking is because it was fiberglass reinforced by earlier owners. I have been looking into Ipe wood as a replacement for the cracking fiberglass sole. It's physical properties are very similar to Teak, although more dense (it is also resistant to marine borers). I have connections where I get the Ipe for as little as 1-2$ a bordfoot, but I would like to know what I am getting into before I even propose cutting the fiberglass liner out. Has anyone used Ipe before? has anyone replaced the fiberglass with a teak sole before? I would like to know what is under the liner before I begin, and I am hoping someone has pictures? have any general comments or considerations? It seams Ipe is newer wood to the consumer market. I believ it would be ideal for interior decking, especally around the belge. (Ipe has several names, a common one being brazillian wallnut.)(this is a MarkII by the way) Thanks,

: We have a hull #12 Yankee, after reseating deck
: fittings (chain plates, stanchions, sail
: track-replaced with new sailtrack,
: installed windless, in addition to many
: other repairs) and thru bolts we are
: moving on to fiberglass repairs. Of most
: concern is cracking in the sloping areas
: of the fiberglass sole at side of the head
: and at the base of hanging locker. The
: crack at the base of the hanging locker is
: 1 foot long and full thickness. We would
: like to repair it from the underside, and
: restore to original appearance. We are
: considering backing the area with a dense
: "expanding foam" (for
: structure)in addition to some minor
: patching in visible areas. We may overlay
: with carpet. We took up the teak and holly
: marine plywood sole, due to difficulty
: standing on the slick sloped areas, and
: neet for repairs to fiberglass sole. Are
: there any suggestions for supporting the
: weak-weakened fiberglass sole? Has anyone
: used dense "expanding foam"?
: Further more, we are looking for
: information on cleaning out sludge in
: bottom of diesel tank? We have tried
: several ideas, unsuccessfully.
