I removed the rudder from Phoenix (#10)about 15 years ago. After removing the tiller hardware and loosening the gland nut at the hull penetration, it took quite a lot of working the rudder back and forth, full left to full right, from below, to get it to slowly work its way down into the pit that was dug below. Don't think that your doing your self any favors with the sledge, as the hull gland is a pretty close fit, and any mushrooming of the rudder stock will really cause it to hang up. At least with mine, it just took time, patience and some exercise.

: Has anyone removed their rudder? I can't seem
: to get mine out of the boat. I've removed the
: bronze gudgeon and the tiller hardware. I
: was thinking the rudder should just drop
: right out but but it won't. I've been
: punding on the top of the post with a sledge
: hammer with some progress but very little.
: Does anyone have any experience with this?
: It almost seems like it wasn't designed to
: drop out the bottom but I can't imagine why
: they would design it like that. Any help
: would be greatly appreciated.
