Posted by Howard A If the standard baby stays go to the masthead, I wonder if they really need running backstays to fly a staysail? I guess what I'm thinking of is some tiny little spitfire sort of blade that you might fly alone...or with a storm trysail in gale or storm conditions. Something to give you steerage. When they moved the stay forward on IONE, did they have to do any modifications to the interior? Backing plates, etc.? Is there a bulkhead or something to anchor to? I can see the reason for doing it, but then it gets in the way of the genoa when tacking. Fun things to ponder as winter sets in. Howard --Previous Message--

The photo of Independence shows a sail flying over the cabin, but doesn't look like it was hanked on to any baby stay or inner stay. Looks more like it may have a line or wire in the luff of the sail, and was hoisted to a halyard at the masthead, and simply tacked somewhere on the cabintop. Much like a solent.
: I have not personally used this stay in that
: fashion, but others have flown staysails. If
: you look at the photo of Independence on the
: cover of the Yankee 30 brochure you'll see
: one example under sail. Ione, which was
: modified based on a recommendation from
: Sparkman & Stephens, the designer, has
: the baby stay relocated to the area forward
: of the hatch. As I recall Ione also has
: running backstays. These modifications were
: done prior to Ione sailing throughout the
: South Pacific for a number of years by a
: prior owner.
: All of the S&S 30s built in Australia also
: have this stay forward of the hatch.

: Is there another Yankee site that generates
: email? Not much traffic here. Anyway, I
: wanted to thank Val for letting me crawl
: around and in Snow Bird. A very nice boat!
: Anyway, something I noticed on Snow Bird, and
: now that I look closer, on most Y30's, is
: what appears to be a baby stay just forward
: of the mast. Although it probably wasn't
: intended to be used for a staysail, as in a
: cutter rig, it looks like it could be.
: Has anyone set a small storm staysail on this
: stay? If so, how did it work?
