Projecting sound like Blind Blake and others

Since I haven't heard anyone sound closer to Blind Blake's guitar playing than Ari, I'm posting this question here. How did these old masters project their sound so well? I was listening and attempting to play the first part of Seaboard Stomp and while I have the chord changes, I'm floored by the cleannes and projection of the individual notes, especially of the bass notes. How is this accomplished - especially at that speed?
