Both the 1935 version and the 1960s version belong to the same group of gospel C-tunes... not that they're played altogether predictably, but it was clearly a theme that Rev. Davis liked to work in and there are a couple of ideas that get used across them. If you spend some time with "I Belong To The Band" and "I Am A True Vine" you should be able to make some headway with it.
