Thanks, Will. I find that a lot of times the really forcefull muted Delta sound actually involves just two right-hand fingers, the thumb and index. In an alternate bass picking setting, often the fourth string hit will be a rigid, muted strum across several strings, giving a propelling, syncopated and danceable effect. Someone like Blind Willie Johnson did this a lot, and it's one of the magical elements in a strong rythmic alternate bass picking sound IMO.
: One thing I noticed Lockwood doing some was
: muting by rotating his forearm to put the
: heel of his hand on the strings, so that the
: pluck and the mute were sort of one
: continuous movenment. In other words, he
: would pluck with his thumb, and rotating his
: forearm would be a part of that movement but
: he would continue the movement until the heel
: of his hand muted the strings.
: The muting aspect of this style is key to
: what makes people want to get up and dance I
: think. I'm trying to learn some of this but
: my style is three finger and unmuted, Blake
: style. I learned that style just because
: that's what the first books I got said to do.
: Maybe Ari will give us delta-style right hand
: tips?

: It was a great show. He serves as an
: inspiration to all 89 yr olds. He did mostly
: RJ tunes, which he and he alone learned
: directly from RJ. See him if you get a
: chance. I think I finally figured out some of
: what RJ's picking hand is doing too. I'd
: tell ya but I'd have to kill ya.
