Posted by Ari Eisinger on May 25, 2007, 7:58 pm, in reply to "Re: "You Don't Understand" CD" It's been a long time since I recorded that first album. As I remember, I used picks on most, if not all, of the songs. When I first learned to play, I was taught to use picks, and it took a long time for me to get comfortable without them. I wasn't yet very comfortable playing without picks when I recorded the first album. Now I play some tunes with picks and some without. In general, Blind Blake's style sounds better without picks, stuff on a National steel guitar sounds (or at least feels) better with picks to me, Gary Davis's songs are too hard to play without picks, and generally everything else sounds better without picks to me. --Previous Message--

Sorry I'm late!
: 'Hey, you wanna buy a watch?'.. Not
: abandoned, just laid back..I know for sure
: Ari uses picks when playing resonator
: guitar, but, after that it's a song by
: song/guitar by guitar decision..
: Hey Ari, are you out there? I'm curious,
: too, how do you decide when or when not to
: use picks? If you don't answer within two
: days, we're setting up a Beenie Baby
: franchise in this space.. ;-)

: Thanks for the response. I was beginning to
: wonder if this little forum had been
: abandoned. I was going to start selling
: baseball cards or beanie babies on it. ;-)
: I figured he was going back and forth
: between picks and fingers/nails. I kinda
: assumed the plastic thumbpick and suspected
: metal fingerpicks rather than the plastic
: ones based on the sound he gets. You've
: confirmed that. I've listened to his second
: CD since I initially posted. Wow! He sets
: a high bar.

: ..from what I've seen of Ari's playing he
: uses
: both bare fingers and finger picks,
: depending upon the song/guitar used. Finger
: picks are metal on index and middle and
: plastic on thumb; bare fingers are w/
: long-ish nails on thumb, index and middle..
: Ari, you can chime-in any time on
: this..regards, tom

: I just purchased both of your CDs and have
: just listened to the first one.
:
: First of all, VERY nice. I'm looking
: forward to listening to the second CD.
:
: Second, were you using a thumbpick and
: fingerpick(s) when you recorded this CD?
:
: You get a very nicely balanced sound when
: you pluck multiple strings. I'm trying to
: decide if you used fingernails or
: fingerpicks and whether those finger picks
: were very thin metal or plastic.
