Mark, I'm not real dialed in to new guitars, but, to find a nice player, new or vintage, I'd visit a bunch of guitar stores and play lots of guitars in your price range; attend vintage guitar shows in your area and try out some of the 'parlor' or concert sized guitars some dealers have for sale; if you live near larger cities, visit some vintage dealers; check ebay; check the classifieds on Vintage Guitar Magazine and sites like weeniecampbell.com .. Just be aware that an old concert sized guitar from the 30's bought on ebay may take up your entire budget to get it repaired (loose braces are money black holes and many of these need neck sets, too @ $350)
Recently, a friend bought a concert-sized guitar w/ supurb set-up and tone at the close of a local vintage guitar show for just under $400, so really good ones can be found if you put in the work. Good luck..tom

: I am interested in looking for a parlor size
: guitar that will fit the ragtime sound well.
: I realize that there are
: "numerous" choices out there. My
: budget is $500 and its firm. Right now, I
: am considering either the Washburn R305S
: (very hard to find) or going with a restored
: parlor off of EBAY.
