Hi Pete,
You might benefit from Steve Cheseborough's book, "Blues Traveling -- the Holy Sites of the Delta Blues" -- I use it extensively in my travels.
Also, I have posted some travel diaries at johnpappajohn.com -- click 'enter', and you will see links for three 'Delta Blues Pilgrimages' -- a fourth diary is on the way.

PS: The Delta is safer for people of any race than most places I've traveled to.
