Thanks for the info! I'm familiar with Mahogany as a tonewood, but how would you describe Oak as a tonewood? Or Birch? I believe Tom Cambio also uses Birch. How about pin bridge vs. tailpiece. Can you describe the sound differences between a pin bridge and a tailpiece? I'm leaning towards a Fraulini Angelina 12 string model - mahogany w/tailpeice. Tough to decide without playing them!
: Hi, Pete .. I've played Ari's 12 and have
: played a Hauver 12, too .. First, I have to
: disclose that I spend an hour or so each day
: playing a 20's vintage Stella 12 Jumbo, so
: that's what my ears and hands are atuned to.
: In all fairness, I've only spent a few
: minutes playing each.. I find both the
: Fraulini and Hauver to have a similar sound
: and feel to them..to my ear they sounded
: like a 'new' guitar, not full or rounded out
: like an old one, but a little 'tight'
: sounding, that old v new is an almost
: impossible comparison anyway.
: Both appeared to be well made with attention
: to detail, and careful workmanship. Both
: makers, from what I gather, follow the OS
: construction formula fairly closely, and I
: know Mike H. does a lot of work on old
: Stella/OS guitars. Todd works on lots of
: pre-war guitars, so I'm sure he knows his
: way around a ladder braced 12, too.
: Frankie, who posts here, also owns a
: Fraulini 12 and I've heard recordings of him
: playing (check weeniecampbell.com backporch
: or search 'frankie12string' on youtube.com
: for his channel)Hearing him play his
: Fraulini, I think it has a really nice
: Stella-esque sound, and his playing sure
: helps bring that out, too.
: Can't really say that I'd heard Ari play
: his, but I know it's made w/ spruce top and
: white oak back and sides.
: Hopefully, both Ari and Frankie will chime
: in here, and waxwing has played Ari's 12,
: I'd guess, plus he also has a vintage OS 12
: for comparison.
: Things to ponder if considering new, what
: type of back and side woods
: (mahogany/oak/other), and, what size body,
: Grand Concert (Barbeque Bob) or
: Auditorium/Jumbo (Leadbelly/BWMcTell),
: because those two things will have a great
: impact on sound, as will tail piece vs fixed
: Hope this helps, and am looking forward to
: hearing more ideas..Tom

: Ari, I was wondering if you would share some
: details on your Fraulini 12 string - type of
: woods, upgrade on any inlays, etc.? I
: believe you have the Angelina model? What
: is your opinion of the craftsmanship,
: attention to detail, fit and finish,
: playability/action? How do you usually keep
: it tuned and what brand/guage strings do you
: use on it? Any comments on the guitar are
: Also, I was wondering if you or anyone has
: any knowledge of Hauver guitars? If so, do
: you know how they compare to Fraulini?
: Right now, I have a Taylor 555 12-string.
: It sounds sweet, but it just ain't right for
: the old-time blues...
