lookin' for some help

I'm writing an article for a bluegrass newsletter concerning the song "Salty Dog Blues", which is one of the standards in that genre and have worked my way back to Papa Charlie Jackson.
I didn't know of him before but from what I've learned so far, I'm guessing a 'salty dog' was a woman's lover but I suspect it might have meant pimp.
Can anyone on this site help me out? Would appreciate any informed reply or reference. Feel free to reply directly to my email address because I suspect the regulars here all know this.
