small-town gigging

I've recently moved to small-town America (and will never again go near a large metro if I can help it) and while I've been able to make a respectable living here teaching fingerstyle guitar I've found it absolutely impossible to do any gigging. Bands do all right, but there seems to be no room for, or interest in, solo performers. Any thoughts on how to break this barrier?
