I took lessons for a few years from Ari and watched him write quite a bit of TAB, usually on the computer. (Ari, jump right in here if I'm not accurate) Ari knows lots of songs, so he can often write it from memory, otherwise, he'll play a passage on the guitar, watching his fingering, then write it, or, if he doesn't know how to play the song, he'll listen to parts from CD, then write the TAB, a measure at a time. This process happens very quickly 'cause his ear is very well trained and very accurate...most of the time. My secret pleasure was practicing the TAB at home for a few weeks and finding an error that I could point out at the next lesson ;-) Didn't happen often...
How much you practice these days, Ari??
: Ari, I have your video on Blind Lemon as well
: as on Blind Boy Fuller. WOW. Im curious,
: How much practice and or playing time do
: you put in every day? Your transcriptions
: are phenomanal. What an ear? When
: transcribing, do you have a certain
: technique etc that works? What gives? Your
: playing and singing is really authentic. I
: saw you do a workshop at the Philly folk
: festival about ten years ago and was
: floored. Any body else, feel free to
: comment as well, Im curious. I also play
: old timey music and there just isnt enough
: time in the day to learn it all. Ive been
: playi about 15 years but this is not
: enough. Comment, suggestions?
: P.S. Does anyone out there sometime feel
: awkward singing these songs?
