Posted by Paul Stamler on April 18, 2002, 2:08 am Another query. Does anyone out there know the earliest date of publication for "I'll Be All Right"? Rev. Gary Davis recorded it as "I'll Be All Right Someday", and the lyrics are essentially a personal version of "We Shall Overcome": "I'll be all right, I'll be all right, I'll be all right someday..." "I will be like Him..." "I will overcome...". I've seen references to the song as dating back to the early years of the 20th century, but no actual references, other than to the closely related song by Rev. Charles Tindall, "I Will Overcome", published in 1921 -- but that has a different tune and words that are quite different from "We Shall Overcome". So my question is: when was "I'll Be All Right" first published and/or recorded? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Peace,
