Thanks Ari, Sam and Tom,
I did get over to VI and played some nice '50's era Martins. I really liked a OO-17 but Fred said to get a slightly wider neck I'd have to go for a '30's or '40's model of which he currently had no examples in stock.
I enjoyed meeting Fred. Very knowledgable. Gave me more info on the mystery of a L-00 bodied Gibson I recently purchased. It's been refinished and the badly handpainted Gibson logo is clearly a later addition. I think it's probably a Kalamazoo. It has tortoise binding (Kalamazoo) but a truss rod neck (Gibson). Fred said to check the bracing. It sounds great, is light as a feather, and due to the refinish was reletively inexpensive. If I figure out it really is a Kalamazoo i'll probably relabel it, I think it'll have more cache. I'll post more on this when I get home.
Anyway, thanks again. I had a great time playing vintage guitars and meeting Fred. He even gave me a lead on a possible teacher in the Bay Area who left the Philly area about the same time I did (early '70's). A guy named Mark Silber. Funny I haven't run into him yet. All for now.
John C.
