Rev. Gary Davis chords

I love the Rev. and am trying to play his material but it seems he frequently uses chord substitutions, i.e., non-1st position chords (and not just barred 1st position chord forms either). An example is "I'll Be Allright Someday". You look at his chord progressions and it seems like simplicity itself (C, G, F, etc.) but he's often not simply doing standard chord forms. Does anybody have any info or know any source that talks about Davis' use of chords? Thanks much.
