I'm another alumnus of one of John's "Unwound 3rd" classes (Port Townsend, class of last summer). Using an unwound (.018 to .021) 3rd string is definitely the key to the "Green River" lick.
I now keep a permanent unwound 3rd string on one guitar, and I play the two songs I learned in the class--"Green River Blues" and Robert Curtis Smith's "I'm Going Away"--every day. Great stuff.
