: I worked on this Tommy Johnson song and had the
: opportunity to buy the book from Rory
: Block where this song is played in Drop D
: even if it confused me a bit
: I recently looked at a video tape where
: Houston Stackhouse is playing Canned heat
: and it now looks to me evident that hes
: playing in E, position of D two frets
: up.(4th fret)
: Did anyone of you experienced playing this
: song ?
: Is Tommy Johnson playing in Drop D or E
: position ?
: Yves
I've always thought Tommy Johnson played "Canned Heat" out of D standard tuning, which is where I play it. Lemon Jefferson played a lick which I believe provided the idea for the signature lick in "Canned Heat", but did it in E standard, which might provide a basis for Houston Stackhouse's approach. The lick is played out of the D position, whether you do it in D or E.
All Best,
John
