Big Road blues is palyed in dropped D tuning so it is possible the canned heat is also played in dropped D. I don't canned heat on record so I can't figure it out.

: I worked on this Tommy Johnson song and had
: the
: opportunity to buy the book from Rory
: Block where this song is played in Drop D
: even if it confused me a bit
: I recently looked at a video tape where
: Houston Stackhouse is playing Canned heat
: and it now looks to me evident that hes
: playing in E, position of D two frets
: up.(4th fret)
: Did anyone of you experienced playing this
: song ?
: Is Tommy Johnson playing in Drop D or E
: position ?
: Yves
: Hi Yves,
: I've always thought Tommy Johnson played
: "Canned Heat" out of D standard
: tuning, which is where I play it. Lemon
: Jefferson played a lick which I believe
: provided the idea for the signature lick
: in "Canned Heat", but did it in
: E standard, which might provide a basis
: for Houston Stackhouse's approach. The
: lick is played out of the D position,
: whether you do it in D or E.
: All Best,
: John
