Posted by Ari Eisinger on January 25, 2003, 12:22 pm, in reply to "Re: Blake question for Ari" The touch and feel is perhaps not quite as crisp as usual, although I think it's generally a much better record than Depression Gone From Me Blues. (He's a little out of tune, too, which is rare for him.) The non-ragtimey feel does match the lyrics, which are basically about how it's gotten even harder to be a prostitute in a particular neighborhood. Flashy playing might have clashed with the lyrics, and the playing is really crisp enough IMO.

Oops! I goofed massively about Ashley Street Blues. I listened again and realized:
1) It was Cherry Hill Blues I was thinking of, not Ashley Street Blues.
2) The vocalist is Irene Scruggs, not Leola B. Wilson.
3) It's from Blake's late period, not his early period.

: Actually he did record in E, standard tuning.
: One of his last recordings, if not his
: very last, is Depression Gone From Me
: Blues, which is in E standard. There are
: also one or two from his early recordings
: including, I believe, Ashley Street Blues
: in which Blake is on guitar and Leola B.
: Wilson is the vocalist.
: Not much, but some!
: Hi Ari,
: After I posted the message I got out my
: records and started listening, and there
: was "Depression Gone From Me".
: It strikes me as barely sounding like
: Blake, though. Not that crisp touch you
: would normally associate with him and a
: very dull vocal. "Champagne Charlie
: Is My Name" from the same period
: sounds much better to me. I have never
: heard "Ashley Street Blues".
: Does he sound more like himself on there?

: Ari,
: I was thinking about this recently, and it
: occurred to me that I have never heard a
: recording by Blind Blake in which he
: played in E, standard tuning (at least I
: couldn't remember any). I have heard
: most, but not all of his records, and am
: certain that you have heard them all. Did
: he do any tunes in E standard? If not,
: what a curious omission, sort of akin to
: Lemon never recording a tune in D, as was
: discussed with Frank's listing of Lemon
: tunes by key. Any thoughts on this?
: All Best,
: John
