Posted by Mal Reid I have been struggling to remember the title of the track and the names of the performers. The name Babecue Bob does spring to mind, but the names 'Laughing Charlie' and Peg 'n' Whistle Red (is that something to do with Blind Willie McTell?) also keep coming to mind. The titles Darktown Gamblin The Crap Game The Skin Game Parts 1 and 2 do not sound familiar. I think the singer was singing entirely about woman trouble, and Im sure the song had nothing to do with gambling. I think I can also recall lyrics something like: Well I ask for water, you bring me gasoline But my memory is getting a bit sketchy. Mal.

: Hello,
: I'm hoping someone can help me. Many years
: ago I had a double album, which was a
: compilation of acoustic blues. I lent this
: to someone, who I lost contact with, and I
: never got it back. Something which has
: happened to me far too often. Anyway,
: there was a track on the album which I
: have never been able to find since.
: I would be very grateful if someone could
: tell me who performed it, or preferably I
: would like to know if it is obtainable on
: any currently available CD.
: I shall try to describe what I can remember
: of the track: First there are some chords
: on a guitar
: (maybe a 12 string?) and then there is
: laughter and a dialog as follows: What you
: laughing at Charlie?
: Oh Im just laughing at you, how you trying
: to bar through that beat
: I dont see anything funny in that, Im
: making it good and juicy. Thats the way
: people like it nowadays, with gravy
: running out
: I cant remember what comes next, but further
: on, the dialog continues something like:
: My gal she quit too last night
: Your girl quit too. Whats the matter with
: you and her?'
: Oh I guess its a case kinda like yours.
: Same dog bit you mustve snapped at me.
: Further on it continues: Think Ill sing
: me a little blues
: Lets hear em
: Then there is singing. The lyrics are
: something like: Tell me tell me baby, honey
: whats the matter
: now
: Tell me tell me baby, honey whats the matter
: now
: Well you trying to quit me honey an' you
: dont know how.
: I would be very grateful if anyone can
: identify this record.
: Thank you.
: Hi Mal,
: I don't know if this is the record you have
: in mind, but it occurs to me that it might
: be Barbecue Bob and Charlie Lincoln doing
: "Darktown Gamblin'". They did
: two parts, Part 1 (The Crap Game) and Part
: 2 (The Skin Game). I am just guessing on
: this, but Charlie Lincoln had a very
: infectious laugh, and they both played
: 12-string guitars.
: All best,
: John
