Hi John and Yves,
Yes, I will vouch for Yves's guitar as a great one, really well suited for Country Blues. I have never understood the prejudice against Martins for blues-playing. Bill Broonzy played one for pretty much all of his recordings from the '50s, and I haven't heard too many people complain about the way he sounded back then. It may be that you would find the rosewood-bodied guitars to be a little bright or crisp for your taste, but the 000 and smaller 18s, 17s and 15s (the latter two models are all mahogany) seem to be quite well suited for blues. And after all, it is how you make the instrument sound that determines whether it speaks convincingly in a particular style.
All Best,
John
: hello John
: I play a 20' Martin 018 with silk & steel
: strings G unwound (plain steel) 011.5
: => 047.
: It sounds great particularly for blues delta
: sound.
: You should ask John (Miller) as he knows this
: guitar and is really able to tell you the
: truth about it. I am probably not the
: right person to tell the truth as I love
: this guitar...
: I play slide on but occasionally (when I'm at
: workshop and do not want to bring my
: resonator) It sounds good but you must
: settle down a little bit stronger high E
: (013) ?
: So long

: I play two guitars: a Dean Chrome S resonator
: (which sounds great for slide and/or
: non-slide open tunings), and a Taylor
: 410ce dreadnought for non-slide (which
: sounds great for non-slide standard
: tuning).
: I also pluck around on an Ibanez dreadnought
: which doesn't sound nearly as good as
: either of the above.
: But it sounds pretty good set up for slide
: (this setup involves slightly higher
: action and heavier strings, especially in
: the high string). Set up this way, the
: Ibanez provides a nice middle ground
: between the slicing resonator sound and
: the warm dreadnought.
: I am thinking about getting another quality
: guitar and setting it up for slide (I
: would also play non-slide open tunings on
: it). Any suggestions as to some good
: ones? I have been told to consider a
: smaller guitar, maybe even a parlor model
: -- can anyone offer first-hand experience
: playing slide on one of these?
: I have heard that Martin guitars are not good
: for blues -- opinions?
: Regards,
