Thanks for all the info -- I didn;t know about the ladder/cross bracing issue.
George, your advice especially is appreciated -- I have pretty much settled on a Martin 000C-15E (cutaway, acoustic electric). I haven't played a lefty one yet, but the ones I've heard sound pretty close to what I want. Not too expensive either.
