Rosy, there are cultural norms everywhere, and really, all they are is a way to keep a little semblence of order among a large group of otherwise diverse people. So, in other words, if you want to have a party to celebrate your dear son's 5th birthday, then by all means you should celebrate. 
Don't worry at all about what is normal or expected. Just follow your heart on this matter.
