This is also a big lesson for my husband. He's always trying to get me to ease up on my insistence we cross on crosswalks only. This comes up every time we take a walk, and it's a source of annoyance for me.
A year before my son died, his girlfriend had borrowed his Jeep & accidentally hit and killed a 3-month pregnant woman who was running across a darkened street - not in a crosswalk - in all black clothing just after dark to rent a movie on the same Main Street I referred to above. My son's girlfriend never saw her until she bounced off the windshield & rolled off the hood to the pavement. The young woman & her husband had just moved here to New England from Parkistan 3 weeks earlier. Her death was ruled Pedestrian Negligence, but that didn't make it feel better for us.
That Jeep sat in my driveway for a couple of days after it was impounded by the police before we had it towed away for repairs. It was just an awful reminder to me of what happened that night.
Please everyone - use crosswalks. It's not a 100% guarantee to keep you safe from harm, but at lease drivers are aware that people may be in them and makes them more observant.
Thank you for your kind prayers for this stranger. God bless you all
