I didn't know Iola or Mack Colt at that time, but knew both from mid 1950s. I have postcards from that time, can grab newspaper clippings if you want. the newspaper did put out a special edition book on Iola which would have something from that time. my parents graduated in 1947 from Iola. St Johns was active until 1953. it was located nearer Gas City. I knew Mack Colt - everyone did. my aunt worked for him 'forever'. 701 E Madison, so you lived about 2 1/2 blocks east of me. the new hospital is in that block now, on the south side of the street, and odd numbers are on the street, so unfortunately, I think that might be your old block. I'll check the numbers on my next pepsi run.
Mack was a great guy, but I and my family weren't in his business. I know he was important - at least as a small child sees these things. he was in my father's store often. and very nice to children.
: I was born in Iola June 24, 1937 at St. Johns
: Hospital. I am curious about the town at
: that time and if anyone knows about a Mack
: Colt who, I think, had an oil business (or
: some sort of business) during this time. My
: father, David Meily, worked for him from
: about 1935 until '39 or '40. We lived at 701
: E. Madison. Would love to know more of this
: period in Iola history.
