In Australia, the sale of oral snuff and chewing tobacco was banned nationally in 1991 due to concern about the possible health effects of these products (particularly the risk of mouth cancer). Smokeless tobacco users are allowed to import the product in small quantities for personal use.
It has been argued that allowing some forms of smokeless tobacco to be sold in Australia may be good for public health if smokers switched from cigarettes to smokeless tobacco. Other people argue that most Australian smokers would not want to use smokeless tobacco. However, very little is known about who would be interested in buying these products if the current ban was relaxed.
Researchers at the School of Population Health at the University of Queensland are currently looking for people living in Australia who have used smokeless tobacco to participate in a short survey to better understand who may be interested in using these products if they were allowed to be sold here. The survey can be completed over the phone or by an anonymous written questionnaire. If you are interested in being involved in the survey, please contact Dr Coral Gartner on ph (07) 3365 5543, fax (07) 3365 5442, email:
