Posted by amy My husband and I both use the Vodafone $49 maxicap prepay and we talk to each other heaps. I also use my phone fairly regularly for work and we've never ran out of credit. (I did with their $29 prepay) Keep in mind that you if you plan to use a calling card to the US, you may want a local landline. Most calling cards have a local number to call which will eat through your credit quickly on your mobile. There are a number of calling cards that offer really cheap rates. we have a "Hello" card and a "Global Gossip" card. Both have been terrific. I recently replaced my broken phone with one of the lowend flip phones from Vodaphone. It cost $100 and came with a free month of credit ($49 plan). It's a basic flip with a decent camera and the usual bells and whistles. If you do buy a phone in the US be very certain it works on our bands here. My "international" phone from the US lacked the Australian bands. it was an older motorola. amy --Previous Message--

To add to this, many providers require a two year commitment with a plan. Depending how long you are planning on staying, prepay might be a reasonable option.
: All the phones here use SIM cards whereas most
: in the USA do not. Triband or quadband
: phones here are readily available and vary
: in price from a little over a $100 to much
: more depending on the features etc. A tri or
: quadband will allow you to use the phone
: around the world either with roaming or
: buying local sim card. You could get a more
: basic phone if you do not need it outside
: Australia
: You can do a pay as you go ie prepaid or get
: a plan, which is usually cheaper.
: So... you can go to a store and buy a phone
: which will come with a tel# and a sim card
: and a small amount of credit for usage and
: you are in business. The system is a little
: different in that you only pay for outgoing
: calls - there is a connection fee and then
: you pay per minute thereafter. When I first
: came to Sydney I was astounded at how
: expensive using a mobile (as they are called
: here not cell) is but one gets used to
: everything. There are a number of mobile
: companies - the main being Telstra, Optus,
: Vodaphone and Virgin. You could search their
: websites.

: Hi! My husband and I are moving to Sydney
: and
: are considering all of the cell phone
: options. Any suggestions on this topic?
: Should we get an international phone here?
: Get a phone from a local provider there (and
: if so, any suggestions for a good company)?
