Posted by Janine I have a similar situation. I received my Permanent Resident Visa a month before I left Australia, www.immi.gov.au and received the following information: Janine --Previous Message--

Lawrence,
returning later for a 4 month stay - which ONLY gives me 5 months of residence time. I am currently living in the US.
The RRV in my passport expires on 13 January 2008. I contacted immigration thru their website
(and would suggest you do the same for clarification for your particular situation)
"You will be permitted to continue to live and work in Australia provided
you enter the country before your present RRV expires. As of January 14,
2008 your current RRV will expire. You will have to qualify for a new RRV
in order to leave and re-enter Australia."
I don't know the formula for resident time to qualify for a new rrv but I suspect it is 2 years...since that is the time required for my current original 5 year rrv visa....with one year required prior to the expiration date in order to get a new rrv effective of 14 Jan 2008.
Time is quickly running out for me! And due to the spiraling high rental costs and being on my own - no partner or employer assistance - I am currently looking for a room to rent or flat share - at least for a minimum of 6 months while I look for a job and a place to live. I have checked realestate.com.au, domain.com.au, gumtree.com.au but it has been very difficult to try to arrange something from outside of Australia especially due to the shortage of rental properties.
: Hello – I was wondering if anyone has any
: ideas about the following: I lived in
: Australia for about four years and applied
: for a PR visa during my last year in the
: country. The visa was approved and I
: completed the process, but I had moved back
: to the US at that point. I have the PR visa
: in my passport and returned to Australia for
: a short stay so that it would be activated.
: I think I have about two years left on this
: visa but am now living in the US. Is it
: possible for the visa to be renewed if I am
: outside Australia? Are there any
: requirements that need to be met so that it
: can be renewed? or will I end up losing the
: visa if I do not move back before it
: expires? Or is this visa not valid because
: I have been outside of the country? Just
: wondering if anyone else was ever in this
: situation. Thanks for any ideas. I was
: hoping to come back some day, but time moves
: very fast.
