Moving to Sydney - places to live

I'm from the US but have been living in London for five years. My (English) husband and I are moving to Sydney in January (I'm looking forward to the weather!) We are thinking of living in Double Bay. Would you recommend this as a good place to live? Shockingly for an American, I don't know how to drive, so I would like some place ideally where I can travel around by public transport. My husband wants to be near a beach and I want to be in the city so we thought this was a good compromise. Any advice you could give would be much appreciated! Thank you.
