Hi, Liz! We are also from the States, living in OZ for a year. We did a lot of research and ended up living in Manly which is a ferry ride from Circular Quay and CBD of Sydney. My husband works in Sydney and it takes him 10 minutes to walk to the ferry at Manly and he takes a JetCat to Circular. I don't drive (here, anyway) so I take the buses around. Also, here in Manly, there is a "Hop/Skip/Jump" bus which is free for residents and I also use that, too. If you want to live near the beach, this is the place to be! A little expensive, but so is everything else in OZ. And there is usually something going on in Manly every weekend. Last night we went to the Old Manly Boathouse and saw David Knopfler, of DIRE STRAITS fame...fantastic. People are friendly, too! Good luck...email me if you want more info. We love it here!
