depending on where you are planning to work/study and what your interests and budget are, san francisco has a host of options available to you.
I highly recommend Craigslist for finding a place. Nearly everyone I know used this to get their place in SF. I lived in Nob Hill which is expensive and snooty. I was quite keen on the Inner sunset and would consider going there if I moved back. It's on the tram line and you can easily get downtown. The hayes valley used to be rundown, but is now restored and trendy. For cheap, funky, hippie living the choice is the Haight, however I'd caution you to consider safety in making this choice.
Maybe you could give a few more details about what you are looking for and we could offer up more specific ideas.
As for banks, most US and Australian banks aren't connected even if they are the same name. For example HSBC here does not connect to HSBC there. So you are probably better off finding a local bank once you arrive.
As suggested earlier, Bank of America is good and has many branches. As does Wells Fargo.
For moving overseas, I've had good luck with the way Kent handled our goods, but there are probably cheaper options.
Not sure if you'll have a car, but consider all of the area's transport options: Buses, The Muni (train & trains), The BART (long distance train) and Caltrain (a different long distance train) you can find out more about specific trips at http://transit.511.org
