I would imagine the interested firm would look into an online interview process, if they don't pay for you to interview you here. I would highly recommend visiting the company before you make any commitment. There are shoddy Aussie companies just like you would find in the US.
As for salary equivalency - right now the Aussie dollar is quite strong (nearly 1:1) but the cost of living, higher tax rates, high interest rates etc. means... well, it's all relative. Go to job sites in the US and compare with Aus rates (check out www.mycareer.com.au).
I can say that right now I am being paid very well compared to US rates (since the US is in recession), but 3-4 years ago that was questionable. So again, it's all relative to local/domestic/international economies etc.
