Hi Christine -- I actually have had to get several notaries as well and bumped into the same cost issue you're encountering. But, after some research found a lawyer in North Sydney that will do notaries for free. He did all of my closing paperwork for a house in the US and has done several since then. We did donate to his preferred charity in lieu of payment. Feel free to contact me via email if you'd like his details.
