Hi Chris,
Congrats on your choice of Australia! I am originally from NY but have lived here for almost ten yeara and I am here permanently. I spent 6 years in Sydney before moving to Adelaide 3 years ago.
Employment like temping, clerical, office support etc should be plentiful. Check out websites for recruiters like Kelly Services, Hudson, Michael Page, Manpower, Adecco. In the workplace, just be yourself and don't act like Captain America if you can help it.
Rents in Sydney are relatively high since there is a rental shortage. There are nice places in Sydney in the Eastern Suburbs (Coogee, Tamarama etc) with lots of uni students living in apartments. My advice is to visit some of the univ campuses in Sydney and their notice boards for rentals. Expect to pay no less than $300 a week for a 'so-so' place and the closer to the city the costlier. Demand is so high for rentals that you may be lining up with others to inspect apartment - no joke. Google real estate for Sydney and you should get the idea. Live near the beach for the true Sydney experience even if it costs a bit more. Public transport is extensive, cheap and generally good. Trains, buses and ferries connect places up very well. No need for a car if you live and work within a decent radius of downtown. Plus, roads can get pretty congested. If you can swing it, I would recommend using your US credit cards here and arrange for someone in the US you trust to pay the statements when they come due. Saves having to bring too much cash.
Good luck. I arrived here with nothing but a duffel bag and managed to set up a great life here so I'm sure your 2 years will be a blast. Beware, you may not want to leave. P.S. - Sydney ladies put the F-I-N-E in fine.

: Me and a buddy of mine have just graduated
: from university and are planning on living
: and working in Sydney for a year or two.
: We're in the process of getting our blue
: cards, so our residency status should be
: shipshape.
:
: I just have a few general questions:
:
: Is finding employment relatively easy for
: educated americans? We're not looking for
: careers, obviously, but hopefully something
: better than waiting tables.
:
: Also, what kind of rent are we looking at
: for a cheap apartment?
:
: Will we need a car? or is public transit
: widely available?
:
: How much money should we bring?
:
: My friend is wanting to do London, but being
: from Texas, I'm trying to convince him we'd
: be much happier in the more warm,
: hospitable, and better exchange rate down
: under.
:
: I'm very glad to find this group. thanks for
